Ge Krautkramer NDT Spotchecker Sensing & Inspection
SpotChecker is a hand-held flaw detector for testing spotwelds in situ on the production line. It weighs just 3.2 kg, is battery operated and is sealed to IP65. It features hot swap battery exchange to ensure continuous operation. SpotChecker does not require intensive training but offers the advantage of an “expert” system for people less qualified in weld inspection.

GE enhances its line of portable ultrasonic flaw detectors with Krautkramer USM 36 Detector — the “workhorse of flaw detectors”. Biggest A-Scan display in its class enables easy viewing and highly accurate data interpretation in all lighting environments. Ideal for use in code-based inspections in the oil & gas, automotive, rail, aviation, mining and construction industries.
Huerth, Germany XX November 2013 GE’s (NYSE: GE) Measurement & Control business announced the Krautkramer USM 36, the latest addition to its robust suite of portable ultrasonic flaw detectors. Combining ergonomic and sturdy design with state-of-the-art inspection performance, the new instrument offers the largest usable display screen in its class and a range of innovative features.
The Krautkramer USM 36 can be used in most known applications and code-based inspections in the oil & gas, automotive, rail, aviation, mining and construction industries. It integrates the high-tech operating platform of the well-established USM Go with the robust housing of the USM 35. Battery- or mains-operated, it uses the familiar rotary knobs of the USM 35. Function keys have been minimized into an intuitive six-key keyboard, allowing easy and efficient operation. Moreover, the use of a common operating platform means set-up and inspection data can be directly interchanged from the USM Go and USM Go+ instruments, eliminating the need to re-program the detector when switching between instruments.
“According to inspection technicians, display size and readability of display screens is an essential feature of any flaw detector,” says Johann Klein, product manager at GE Measurement & Control, inspection technologies division. “Our new flaw detector has a 7-inch screen with an 800×480 pixel resolution and the entire area is available to display A-scans, making it one-third bigger than others on the market and the best in its class. Data can be easily viewed and accurately interpreted, improving conditions for inspectors working under various light conditions and for long periods of time.”
The Krautkramer USM 36 is also fully protected against dust and water ingress to IP66 and can be used in temperatures ranging from -10 to +55°C. Data can be stored on a removable SD card or USB memory stick, while a video graphics array (VGA) connection allows the instrument’s display to be shown on an external monitor or on a projector screen for training purposes.
The versatile instrument is available in three versions. The most advanced version is operable in DAC and AWS modes, and it features a powerful square wave pulser for excellent material penetration and can accommodate GE’s patented trueDGS defect sizing technology. It offers exceptional accuracy in sizing of flaws using the DGS method, as well the patented Phantom Echo Detection technology.
